Phnom Penh

Hello Hello! We are back in Phnom Penh. We took a bus back yesterday..$7 for a 5 hour trip:-) Had to return as we are flying out of here to Ho Chi Minh City tomorrow! I actually don't dislike this city as much as I thought..we are staying in the heart of the city, so it's more friendly with nice cafes. It's growing on me! Especially after our outings today (see below). Very excited to explore Vietnam though! We have 29 days left in South East Asia. Tonight we went to a local cinema. A very cute, community owned, small theatre. We saw the film 'Room'. Great film if you haven't already seen it. The main actress just won an Oscar award for it. They had mattresses to lay down on, or cute seats above. You could order drinks and food also. We also visited the Russian Markets today. They were massive. They have a range of clothing, jewellery, bedding, household things, mechanical stores and fruits & veges.  Well that's about all for the moment. Will post once we ...

Koh Ta Kiev Island

We're back from Koh Ta Kiev Island! What a beautiful place. The last few days have been perfect. So relaxing, just what we needed after some pretty crazy cities that we have been visiting recently. We departed for our day trip on a boat from Otres Beach on Tuesday and that took us snorkelling around a couple of the surrounding islands. We visited elephant rock for some cliff diving..(Theo jumped but not I!) Spot the cliff diver! Then we headed for Koh Ta Kiev where the other people on the boat were just visiting for a few hours and then going back to the mainland, whereas we decided to stay. The tour guide spoke very little English so it was impossible explaining to him where we wanted to be dropped off (especially because we didn't know where it was exactly!) so he ended up stopping the boat and we had to get off right there. We had to carry our 18kg bags on our heads to get them on and off the boat dry Where are we??? !! We discovered that people br...

Out of reception

Hello all :-) Just a post to let you know we may be out of reception the next few days. We are heading to an island called Koh Ta Kiev . We are pretty sure they don't have reception or Internet. We think we will be staying at accommodation called Crusoe Island. So, if contact is needed urgently, look them up (crusoeisland.asia) and they have a couple of numbers and email available. Love to you all xxx  The picture below is one of the lady's that walk around the beach with fruit on their heads. They cut it up and put it in a little bag with a skewer for you :-) mmmmmm

Cambodia

Hi all!! Well we arrived in Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia on Wednesday night. Phnom Penh was chaotic, polluted, hot, and two words: bed bugs. We got out of there pretty quickly! But before we did we made sure we visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. Both of which were heart wrenching and profoundly depressing experiences. But, nevertheless it was interesting and gives an understanding of the country after going. I will leave it at that as I wouldn't be able to write down the horrible details of what happened then in the 1970's. Bracelets left in honour of the victims  Cambodia is very different to Thailand. They pay in US dollars and drive on the right side of the road. Cambodian Riel is only used mostly by locals. So we have a range of US $$ and Cambodian Riel. We hopped on a very comfortable, air conditioned mini bus to Sihanoukville for $10 each. Sihanoukville suits us much better. A province known for its beaches and bars. We like it here! The a...

On to the next!

Hi everyone! Just a quick post to let you know we are on our way back from Pai to Chiang Mai. Staying in Chiang Mai tonight and then we are flying out of Thailand to Phnom Penh in Cambodia tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing what Cambodia has in store for us! :-)

Pai Canyon

Hello! Yesterday we went to the Pai canyon. Lots of climbing and beautiful views. The great thing about Pai is many of the attractions are free. In Bangkok and Chiang Mai the locals often charged a small amount to enter. Happy Valentine's Day <3  X Grace

Pai :-)

We thought we loved Chiang Mai but we have totally fallen for Pai!! Today we were up at 7am. A difficult task these days. Headed to Pai. The road, we were told, can be very dangerous. Checked out the minivan option..heard only horror stories of crazy bus drivers, people fearing for their lives, and vomit. Hmmm. So we decided to take it on ourselves!! Hired the scooter for some extra days. Chucked our bags into a minivan (they took them to Pai for us-very handy!) and off we went!  We were very happy with our decision to drive the road ourselves, as we got to see the most stunning scenic views. Something you would not be able to see in a winding minibus. It took us a little longer than five hours to get to Pai. Pai is a lovely, relaxed little town. We are staying in a gorgeous little bungalow about ten minutes from the centre of town. The gardens are beautiful!

Chiang Mai

We spent the day at Huay Tung Tao lake in Chiang Mai yesterday. What a gorgeous wee spot. No tourists. Just a few locals and their children floating around. There's a whole lot of these little huts (pictured) all around the lake with a couple of local restaurants attached. A lovely day relaxing and reading in the sun :-)  On Wednesday we ventured up into the Doi Suthep Poi National Park on the scooter. We found a beautiful temple ( not surprising!) in a very cute mountain village. Most people were visiting the temple and then heading back down the mountain..(as many people take small buses or Tuk tuks). We decided to head further up to see what we could find. Came across the most beautiful little village called Doi Pui. At the highest point of the mountain.. It was the most gorgeous wee village with beautiful flower gardens and a small waterfall. Well worth the extra drive!!  Hope everyone is well back in New Zealand. We do miss you!! Xx Grace

Chiang Mai

We absolutely love Chiang Mai! What a relief after crazy Bangkok. The people here are so friendly and laid back. Apart from having to sleep on a bed as hard as a rock, and thank goodness for travel mosquito nets, everything is going well! :-) Off to explore! Grace xxx

Playing it safe with his tuna roll..

Hello :-)

Hello Everyone! Sorry we have been away from the computer the last few days! Both Theo and I have been unwell with a bad tummy bug :-S We were trapped in our Bangkok accommodation for about three days! Luckily we were able to do some exploring before and after all of this, and we are now at the airport heading to Chiang Mai for the week. Bangkok has been pretty chaotic, we started out just off Khaosan Road which is the backpackers central. In his element ordering Thai street food (Probably what made him sick !!) We then moved to a quieter area but still close to everything. We took the boat ferry for 14 Baht each ( 60 cents ) to the Grand Palace. What a beautiful place! But as usual, packed with tourists! On the boat taxi We saw a Symphony Orchestra in the park More updates to come. Miss and love you all xxx

Emerald Pool - Krabi

This little beauty is called the Emerald Pool. We drove an hour on our scooter to find this natural hot spring. The pictures don't really do it's colours justice though !

Tiger Temple

We absolutely love Krabi town! Arrived today by bus (meaning small vehicle with bench seats on back). It is inland but settled nicely along a river which is busy with water taxi's and fishing boats. There are heaps of groovy coffee shops and backpackers around too. We hired a scooter this afternoon and headed to the Tiger Temple.. 1,237 steps later !!! The steps weren't easy steps either, it was a giant lunge to get from one to the next and extremely steep but so worth it. The temple and its views were stunning :-)
