Alleppey & Varkala

Greetings! Currently I am swinging in a hammock outside our room. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and the waves are crashing in the near distance. I've just finished my book. It sound perfect, and it is, but it was torture finding our way here! We are currently in Varkala staying near Varkala Cliff but before I fill you in on here I'll quickly tell you about Alleppey. We stayed in Alleppey for two nights. We were there to see the Alleppey Backwaters. In the morning we headed to the river where all the tour companies sit with their boats offering deals. We were hoping for a half day tour but most were only offering full day tours (nine hours) and were a little out of our price range. Luckily we found a lovely local who took us on a four hour ride for considerably cheaper. I reckon this was actually a nice way to do the backwaters because he had a small boat The was able to fit through the smaller canals, we had the boat to ourselves so we could take our time, and he t...

Fort Cochin to Munnar

Hello everyone, We left Udaipur last Saturday and flew to Kochi in Kerala and we stayed in Fort Cochin for three nights. Fort Cochin was nice. It was small and pretty quiet. It was Onam which is the Hindu Festival that actually originated in Kochi so there were lots of family celebrations going on. They celebrated in a similar way we do for Christmas. Most families travelled to be together and ate lots of food . There were many restaurants closed but we found one open that was serving their traditional Onam meal called Onam Sadhya. Usually served on a large banana leaf, it has 25(sometimes more) of the different kerala curries. The Indian people eat with their hands and the lady in the restaurant was adamant that I try it that way. It's very difficult to eat rice with your hands but the indians are very good at it! Yesterday we bravely took the bus from Fort Cochin into the mountains of Munnar. A hill station home to the largest tea growing region. It was a 5 hour bus rid...

Udaipur

I wrote this post a couple of days ago so it's slightly out of date :) We have arrived in Kochin, Kerala xx Udaipur has been wonderful. A total different experience to both Goa and Jaipur. Surrounded by Pichola lake, we have been staying in an area that has small, narrow streets which only fits scooters and the odd tuktuk. It has a much more chilled, boho vibe around here and the people are very happy. There are lots of children running and playing freely down the streets and elderly sit in their doorways all day long greeting us with 'namaste' and bowing their heads. Udaipur is famous for being part of the James Bond film Octopussy and the locals are extremely proud. Most restaurants play the film every night. The 5 star hotel that sits in the middle of the lake is the main attraction from the film, along with Monsoon Palace. It is also well known for it's art. There are many art shops scattered around with the most amazing artwork. Artists have also...

Jaipur-Day two

Our Tuk-tuk driver was waiting outside our hostel at exactly 10am. Our first stop for the day was Hanuman Temple (Monkey temple). The drive there was fascinating and heart-breaking, we wound through the city and out into what we think was the slums of Jaipur. Most people around here were living under four sticks and a piece of material. Tarpolin if they were lucky. It was 34 degrees so we saw many children bathing in small, dirty puddles. Sitting in the hills above these small villages was Hanuman Temple. We were dropped at the bottom and made our way up the hills dirt roads. There were hundreds of monkeys playing and picking at eachother on the way up. Along with lazing cows and goats. We met an Australian couple on the way up and carried on to the top with them. Multiple Indian men tried their luck at trying to get money from us for being our 'bodyguards'. It took a lot of polite declining of their offers before they finally backed off. At the top, a man applied a yellow...
